Training

Anthony Greentree
A lot of Cycling has taken place between me and Martin over the past few months, to the point where it has replaced the car for traveling to work and back. Martin lives in Wales and has the advantage of the Welsh mountains for his training. He also travels 30 miles a day to his work which is a big chunk of training in itself.

For me living in a flatter parts of the (Nottingham) I have had to plan long routes to the hillier parts of Derbyshire. Bakewell was a great start to the training which was 70 miles in total, long rides to Corby and Warickshire to build on the stamina for the long haul ahead.

Martin will be using a Road bike as he already has been involved with Triathalons for his previous charity work. I will be using a Mountain bike and replace the tyres with road tyres for extra speed.

The most important thing when training is plenty of fluids and sweet snacks, otherwise you will end up with a thing called "bonking" which is a similar thing that runners have if they "hit the wall". Basically it means that your body runs out of its glucose store and you end up burning yourself out, losing co-ordination and feeling rather faint. We will be making several checkpoint stops along the way to stock up on our energy levels. My Father will be on hand in his back up vehicle to help with potential problems along the way.

We will also be taking spare bike parts and tool kits in case we have and technical hitches too.
